Shinshin Mugendo: The Art of Total Fighting In keeping with its philosophy, the co-founder of Shindokai, Ben Otake, has developed a method of training he calls Shinshin Mugendo. The basic movement in Shinshin Mugendo is the figure eight, or more appropriately, the inifinity symbol. The kanji for Shinshin Mugendo translates to the way of the infinite mind/body and this attitude is present in Shindokai's training method. If we trace the figure eight, we will find that it forms a continuous pattern. Hand movements done in this pattern can then be continuous in nature as opposed to linear movements, which have a definite beginning and an end. The main difference between the figure eight and a simple circular movement is that the figure eight allows you to continuously change directions without having to break the fluidity of the movement. It should be noted here, however, that continuous movement does not mean you are continually moving. It only means that the potential exists for a movement to continue into another movement without having to stop or reset your body position. Also, while promoting circular movements through the figure eight, we do not avoid or ignore linear movements. Both types of movements can be applied within this pattern thus going from one to the other seamlessly. Hand movements with the figure eight lead to a variety of blocks, strikes, arm locks, chokes, and throws. Learning the movement is relatively easy and after you become comfortable with the movement, you will find that it leads to a natural, comprehensive method of self defense that can be used by beginning and advanced martial artists alike. One of the unique features of Shinshin Mugendo training is that it is beneficial to all types of martial artists. Whether people train in judo, karate, or aikido, this movement helps them to incorporate techniques they already know into a more comprehensive base. Each martial artist will have his own interests but he should also be aware of the other arts; Shinshin Mugendo helps him to achieve this goal. |
